Andre Borell has finished in a dissapointing 5th place at Round 3 of the Queensland Tri Series at the weekend. Competing in the official Sprint distance event, the race consisted of 750m swim, 20km cycle leg, and a 5km run. Having recently competed in the Olympic distance Noosa Tri, the distance would not be an issue, but the higher pace would prove to catch Andre out.
The race started well, with Andre surviving his weakest leg - the swim - having only lost around 1 minuite to the leader. Borell then lived up to his nickname “Lance” by dominating the cycle leg. The quickest on the course by some margin, Andre came into the run in third place.
This is where his strong performance fell apart however as he “hit the wall” or “bonked”. Andre explained the situation ”There was nothing left in the tank, I totally ran out of energy. It’s a bizzare feeling, your mind wants to keep pushing, but your legs won’t let you. You literally have no response”.
Andre eventually struggled home with a run time of 21min and an overall time of 1hr09min. “I’m gutted” commented Borell, “I didn’t get a proper meal into me before the race, and that hurt me. I was on for a podium if I hadn’t died like that for sure. Look out at Robina for Race 4 in January. I’ll be a better athlete and will eat breakfast this time”!
